The Ancient Howl
Started By
Dozens of domestic dogs around the world were lead to an enchanted cave by mysterious instinct. These dogs were big and small, dull and multicolored, friendly and shy, and dominant and submissive. Yet, despite their differences they all calmly circled around a sparkling pool in the center of the cave. Something unexplainable whispered to every single one of them to start lapping up the glittering liquid they had surrounded. A brief trance took over these canines, but soon enough they were all fully conscious and aware of their current inner change and destiny. They had all been granted the ability to heal the wound of any creature they touch with their paw and howl.
The dogs soon departed out of the cave, but were somehow all united in the same old rundown town eventually. Some were still arriving, and some had lived there for about a year now. Either way, this town's humans desperately needed these dogs, despite the fact these humans should never know of these dogs' powers.
The humans were having a war, and many of the injured soldiers were brought here because they were too broke to afford any other place to stay. The dogs were meant to heal the humans, but if any human were to find out about these dogs' powers all magic would be in jeopardy. The dogs meet in alleys and parks occasionally to discuss strategies, but they must never let their guard down.

Will your dog succeed and fulfill its destiny?

Benji's tail thumped the ground harder at Rain's voice. So many questions ran through his mind, it was hard to explain. He raised an eyebrow at the lady, hoping she would forget about it and just move on with her life. Benji cocked his head. What was this... His dream! It had come true! He had howled and then Rain was healed suddenly! Could it be true? Was he truly a magical awesome dog that could heal the broken with just one howl? Benji glanced at Rain, his eyes in wonder. He searched his mind for a plan of some sort, but the only thing that came was How? "We run on three." Benji whispered unintentionally. He looked up at the human. "One... two... three.. GO!" HE tuned and ran as fast as he could, looking behind him to see if Rain was following.

Rain grinned, and her tail swagged a bit. But, she was extremely aware of the fact that this human didn't know how Rain was healed either, and that humans would go unlimited lengths to figure out.<br /> "We'll celebrate later, right now we have a bit of an issue with the human," Rain said and motioned towards the gasping lady.<br /> The woman was slowly backing up, and never taking an eye off the two stray mutts. "Am I delusional?" she kept whispering to herself. <br /> If only she was being delusional, for Rain and Benji were now in a very bad situation.

11-22-2012 at 11:10 PM
Benji looked at Rain, pure joy in his eyes. He took a glance at the woman and ran towards Rain. "Rain! Your alive! How are you healed?!" He licked her face and rubbed his head against her with delight. His tail wagged uncontrollably and his eyes were bright. Benji Smiled wide and said, "I thought you would die on me. You have no idea how I would feel if that happened." his voice was serious and kind, mostly loving and obviously elated.

11-20-2012 at 11:59 AM
Rain blinked. The pain had just vanished, in the blink of an eye! Was she dead? No, she looked around and made the conclusion she was alive. Suddenly, her paw began to grow back together at the speed of a deflating balloon. Rain watched in aw as her smashed paw restored itself to the normal form. Still completely shocked, she got up on all fours and simply stood there, in front of the field.<br /> <br /> The woman gasped and jumped back as she felt Benji's teeth wrap around her leg. But, she looked down at him and realized he had meant no harm, he just wanted help. Wiping her tears, she looked up at Rain and nearly fainted. How was her paw healed? How in the world was it healed?

11-15-2012 at 1:13 PM
"No! No,no,no,no! Don't die! You can't die! We'll have beautiful pups! Rain, please, don't die!" Benji wailed. He started licking her whole body to stimulate her breathing. He felt tears well up in his eyes but he shoved them down his throat. Benji stopped licking her. He put his paw on hers and howled. He sounded sad and most of all hurt. He lowered his head and looked around again. Like he had told himself before, he was not going to let her slip through his paws. He would not let Rain die, even if it meant having to approach a human. Benji sniffed the air. He walked up to the human and whimpered, grabbing onto her pant leg and pulling gently.

11-15-2012 at 12:59 PM
Rain blinked a few times, and stared into Benji's eyes. He was incredibly blurry and she had a hard time registering what he said. Rain tried getting up, but she really couldn't get her body to budge. Blood was still oozing out of her in drastic measures, despite Benji's licking.<br /> "H-h-h-howl...." Rain sputtered quietly. What she said next was more forceful. "Howl... in hon-n-n-nor of my.... d-d-death."<br /> Rain looked into Benji's eyes, planning on that being the last time she ever would. "Would've..... 'made g-g-great pups....... howl!" her voice rasped and her eyes slowly began to close. Her expression was growing blank.<br /> <br /> The woman didn't plan on crying much more. She knew this animal needed help, so she began to rub her tears away.

11-15-2012 at 12:51 PM
Benji shot a glare and growled at the lady one last time, and ran after Rain. "Rain! Are you okay? Come on we need to get you back to the den or-or somewhere safe! Speak to me Rain!" Benji said, looking at her ankle and gasping. "Your ankle!" he started licking it and trying to get the blood to stop oozing out. He was starting to panic and he wished that he didn't let Rain go out by herself. He looked around frantically for anything to put on her foot to make it stop bleeding. Finding nothing, he looked at Rain, his eyes worried and caring. "Rain, what do I do?" he muttered, half to himself.

11-15-2012 at 12:41 PM
The woman slowly approached and picked up the broom again, hoping this method wouldn't spark aggression within Benji. She was unsure of what to do now. She highly respected strays, and understood a lot of them here wouldn't actually want to be "rescued". This dog, here in the metal trap, DID need to be rescued though.<br /> Pointing the broom towards Benji and keeping a careful eye on him, she stamped on the trap lever with all her might. Rain popped out with a squeal and limped away as fast as she could, her ankle bone smashed. The woman couldn't bear to look, so she risked her own safety and buried her face into her hands, sobbing. Rain collapsed on the ground due to blood loss as she did.

11-15-2012 at 10:47 AM
Benji didn't budge. He stood there and barked again, hoping it would scare the lady off. He stomped his foot in warning and raised an eyebrow as she spoke. He knew he looked scary but he didn't see any signs of the woman leaving. A growl rose from his throat. He glanced at Rain, just to see how she felt about the situation. He could tell she was in pain, but scared also. It worried him to see her like this. It almost made him nervous. Though the woman was no threat, Benji still felt the need to protect Rain. He hadn't had anything to protect in a long time, and part of him needed it.

11-14-2012 at 9:51 PM
The woman screamed in response to Benji, now aware that the trap had not caught a coyote, but a tricolor dog with no clue of what she ever did to deserve this treatment.<br /> <br /> Though the woman did come armed with a broom, she did not bring it for beating, she brought it for defense. She planned on releasing whatever animal had been trapped and herding the animal back into the woods with her broom all before the sun came up and before anyone suspected a thing.<br /> <br /> Now, the woman trying to help was in mortal danger of being mauled by a stray.<br /> "It's o-o-o-o-okay honey...." she whispered to Benji.

11-14-2012 at 5:52 PM
Benji's ears perked at the sound of the howl. He started to run towards it and he got there a few minutes later. He half-expected to find a pool of blood with no Rain, but what he found angered him more. The lady with a broom, and Rain in a coyote trap meant for a bear. He growled, his head low, his ears pinned, his fur on end. He lunged at the lady and ripped the broom out of her hands. He lood in front of Rain, eyes saying: Don't come any closer.

11-14-2012 at 2:20 PM
Rain's heart also seemed to beat out of her chest. She whined and yelped, despite knowing no one could hear her. The pain was as fresh as ever, for very few nerves in her paw had died this soon. This was absolute torture. She kept screaming and tried to wriggle her paw free, but that only made it worse. The entire trap was being smothered in Rain's blood. Finally, she made one, piercing howl. Birds fled from their trees. and squirrels hid in their nests.<br /> <br /> A human came running down the lane towards Rain, armed with a broom, expecting a much more dangerous creature to be trapped under that metal. Still, this female human came armed and ready. Rain's heart nearly stopped in fright.

11-14-2012 at 12:53 PM
Benji wandered in aimless circles. He was, very slowly, but surely getting close to the den. He sniffed the air and what he smelled alarmed him. Blood. Fresh blood. Rain's fresh blood. He started running and howling, "Rain! Where are you! I'm coming!" As he got closer, Benji started to hear yelps of pain. He became frantic and tried to block the scent and smell. He bolted straight forward, still getting further, and further away. He blocked the scent and sound out still, and the only thing he could hear now was the sound of his own breath coming in fast, raspy whispers.

Rain had wandered more than she meant to over the night, and had been walking along the border of the forest on the entire other side of town than Benji was searching.<br /> <br /> Rain had arrived here just as the sky was changing its hue from dark blue to faint pink. Though she dearly wanted to enter the mossy part of the forest, she promised herself to just walk along the border. The entire scene was beautiful; a photographer's dream I should say. Rain was admiring it too, until a juicy scent swelled up in her nostrils. Just a few feet from her, the entire heart of a cow laid untouched on the lush ground. Was this to good to be true? Rain pranced up to it in delight, planning on swiping it and bringing it back to Benji for breakfast.<br /> SNAP! Rain yelped in merciless misery. Metal teeth seemed to have chomped her paw in half, only she wasn't lucky enough for that. Her ankle was being grinded between the trap's teeth; the trap meant for coyotes. Rain was screaming now. The trap seemed to grip harder every second. She knew death was her fate, but she wasn't giving up just yet.

11-14-2012 at 10:50 AM
Benji opened his eyes a slit. It was closer to dawn, and the sky was pink, most of the stars gone. He looked around. No Rain. He peeked outside. No Rain. Beji ran up the path and tumbled down. "Rain!" he called, hoping she'd hear. He ran up the hill, finally, and ran into the forest, opposite of where his friend was. "Rain!" he barked more loudly this time, but further away. He looked behind him. -Where am I?- he wondered. He was lost. "Rain!" he howled, his head tilted towards the pinkish sky. The tip of the sun rose past the horizon. "Rain! Where are you?!" he howled still.

11-13-2012 at 10:03 PM
After a few stumbles and tries, Rain was finally able to conquer that slope. She tilted her head up slightly, admiring the stars and the half moon they surrounded. The moon wasn't that high up though, for it was in the process of dragging its stars slowly but consistently to hide behind the far off hills.<br /> Rain trotted along for awhile, occasionally stopping to sniff and admire the shrubbery. Though it was supposed to, this didn't seem to calm her nerves. So, she hunted down the nearest stick she could find and made sure it felt comfortable hanging from her jaws. It did. Rain then plumped down on the ground, placed the twig in between her forepaws, and got chewing. She pondered over Benji's silly dream as she did.

11-13-2012 at 7:45 AM
Benji was slightly afraid that she would leave him, slip right through his paws just like his human had. But, he knew he must trust her. "If your not back by the time the sun is completely showing I'll look for you." Benji muttered, hoping she didn't hear him. He sighed and went back inside the cave. What was that? Benji had no idea. He didn't know what had come over him as they stared at each other. He felt like he needed to protect Rain with his life no matter what. In addition to this, he still had a feeling something was here... Something big and important. He sat in the middle of the den and his nose twitched. The fishy smell that rose from the water told him that there was food in there, and that it would be smart of them to stay in this itsy bitsy cave. He sighed and laid down with his head in his paws. His body ached with exhaustion and hew wanted nothing more than sleep. Benji did not sleep though. He would wait for Rain to get back. Nevertheless, Benji's eyes fluttered and shut, he let the darkness take him deep into dreamland.

11-12-2012 at 9:22 PM
"It's not like I'll sleep anyway, in these conditions at least," Rain chuffed and looked deep into Benji's eyes. <br /> She didn't notice that if anyone or anydog was to spot them at that very moment, they'd come to the immediate conclusion that the two stray mutts were in love. I mean, it was the most reasonable response. They were both sitting just a foot or two from each other, cocking their heads slightly, and staring into each other's eyes.<br /> Rain wasn't looking for love in Benji's face though, she was looking for answers. Why was this dog sticking to her like old maple syrup from a rusty garbage can? It was obvious to Rain that this dog wanted a closer relationship than they had, but she just couldn't tell how close he was daring to go.<br /> Many, many moments went by, just like that. Eventually the river made an extra loud splash and made the two snap out of their moment.<br /> "Go back to sleep, Benji. Please do so. I'm going to walk around until I feel like sleeping, or until dawn has overcome us," she whispered in a soft voice.<br /> After slightly bowing her head goodbye, she began to study the small slope in which their cave was carved into to find an easy route out.

Benji cocked his head. What was Rain doing? He walked and sat next to her. "What exactly are you doing? It's nearly dawn, get some more sleep for goodness sakes!" he said with a great, big yawn. He stared at his reflection and wondered why his eyes were the way they were and why the tips of his ears folded over when he was tired. He tired to perk them back up but was unsuccessful, so he looked at Rain and waited for her response. Once again, he was entranced by her beauty in the moonlight, and the feeling he had gotten was back again. He looked away quickly, and tried perking his ears again. Again, he failed thirty seconds later.
